Short-term vs long-term gains

Gains on assets held one year or less are short-term and taxed as ordinary income. Gains on assets held longer than a year are long-term and taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your total taxable income. Long-term gains stack on top of your other income, so more of them can fall into a higher rate.

Net investment income tax

Higher earners may owe an additional 3.8% on investment income when income is above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). This tool estimates it using your taxable income as a rough stand-in for modified adjusted gross income.

What this calculator does not include

This is a federal-only estimate for the 2026 tax year using the standard deduction unless you enter itemized deductions.
